  • Top 10 Reasons to Attend Holid Top 10 Reasons to Attend Holiday at the Hive

    • From: HornetHenry
    • Description:

Happy holidays, fellow Hornets supporters! Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or the fact that Bruce Bowen retired from the NBA, I’d like to extend my warmest wishes to you and your family.

Lately I’ve been busy scouring the New Orleans metropolitan area, hoping to find the perfect gifts for Mrs. Hornet Henry and the rest of the clan. When I haven’t been knee-deep in holiday shopping, I’ve been updating my Facebook page with photos (add me as a friend on Facebook and check out the cool pictures of Hornets players relaxing in NOLA!). I’ve also started tweeting regularly (check it out at www.twitter.com/HornetHenry). Lately I’ve been celebrating my own personal version of “Festivus” on Twitter, airing several of the grievances I have with folks such as Mark Cuban, Kobe Bryant and the Spurs.

But I digress. I didn’t stop by Swarm City today to rehash the findings of my ground-breaking scientific study that indicates Dirk Nowitzki flops on at least three-fourths of the Mavericks’ possessions. I didn’t come here to expound on my theory that Kobe’s rise in popularity signifies a troubling decline in American parenting skills. No, because to do either of those things would certainly not be in the holiday spirit.

Instead, let’s get to the real reason why I’m here today. I’m here to explain why you should treat yourself to a splendid holiday gift and grace us with your presence at Wednesday’s home game in the Hive. Here are my top 10 reasons to attend “Holiday at the Hive” and witness the Western Conference grudge match between the Hornets and the Golden State Warriors:

      10) Santa Claus is coming to town (and the concourse).

Let’s be honest, the jolly old fella could’ve picked anywhere in the world to be only two days before his big night. But for the third year in a row, Santa chose the New Orleans Arena concourse as his preferred destination. Yes, you read that correctly… Santa is attending Wednesday’s Hornets-Warriors game!

As you can imagine, Santa’s got a pretty busy ledger during this time of year, but he managed to carve out three hours of his hectic schedule just for us. You can get your picture taken with Santa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. outside Section 118 before and during the game. And if you think of it, why not let your kids get their picture taken with Santa, too?

      9) A chance to decorate your tree.

The first 8,000 fans entering the Hive will be given a free Hornets holiday ornament, courtesy of Peoples Health. I can’t wait to hang mine up next to my hand-made ornaments of Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton.

      8) Tons and tons of holiday fun.

In keeping with the spirit of the season, the Hornets will be giving out hundreds of prizes to fans throughout the evening. Don’t miss your chance to catch a free T-shirt from the players, Hugo, the Honeybees or the Buzz Patrol, but make sure you stay on your toes: Honeybee Ginger has been clocked at 96 miles per hour when she’s given at least three days’ rest.

      7) A great deal in the Hornets Nest.

My sources tell me that the adidas “Slam Dunk special” in the Hornets Nest team store during Wednesday’s game will be a red Hornets holiday T-shirt, for the low, low price of $12. I haven’t seen a deal like that since the Hornets traded for Darius Songaila!

      6) The Honeybees and Used to Bees will be there.

As voted by NBA fans, the Honeybees were hands-down the most popular dance team in the Western Conference last season (*excluding dance teams ardently supported by the nation of China). They’ll be celebrating by performing a special holiday-themed routine. The Used to Bees will also be shaking what their mommas gave them way back when.

      5) Hugo will be in the house.

And he’s got a few surprises up his Creole blue sleeves… you’ll have to come to the game to find out what I mean.

      4) A halftime show featuring one of NOLA’s finest musicians.

New Orleans native Kermit Ruffins will be playing live at intermission for the enjoyment of fans. The esteemed New York Times newspaper once wrote of him that “Mr. Ruffins is an unabashed entertainer who plays trumpet with a bright, silvery tone, sings with off-the-cuff charm and never gets too abstruse in his material.”

What in tarnation does "abstruse" mean? I have no idea, but something tells me avoiding it has to be a good thing!

      3) CP3 is playing.

You never know what Chris Paul could do on a given night. He might score 39 points and help beat the Mavericks in overtime. He might rack up 30 points, 19 assists and nine rebounds vs. Denver. He might score the game-winning layup against the Timberwolves on a backdoor cut. Come to Girod Street and find out for yourself what the World’s Greatest Point Guard has in store for the Warriors.

      2) A chance to watch the Hornets continue their dominance in NOLA.

If you’re scoring at home, the Hornets are now 10-3 on their home floor this season, having already beaten formidable foes such as Phoenix, Atlanta, Denver – and much to Hornet Henry’s delight – Dallas. Come to the Hive and help root on the ballclub to its eighth home win over a Western Conference opponent in nine outings.

And the Number One reason to attend Holiday at the Hive is…

Kids 14 and under get in for free!

Do not adjust your laptop. All children ages 14 and younger – provided they are accompanied by an adult who has purchased a ticket to the ballgame – will gain free admission. All you have to do to redeem this offer is visit the New Orleans Arena box office.

What better way to make Christmas come early for your favorite youngster than to bring them to the arena for an NBA game? And unlike the exorbitant amount of money you spent on Junior’s other presents, this one won’t cost you a penny! Talk about an offer that’s perfect for anyone’s budget... I haven’t seen a steal like that since the Hornets traded two future second-round draft picks for Marcus Thornton!

      Until next time, Geaux Hornets!

      Your pal, Hornet Henry

  • New Orleans Hornets - Looking New Orleans Hornets - Looking Into The Crystal Ball

    • From: larry1978
    • Description:

After last Saturday's surprise blowout of the San Antonio Spurs, 102-78, the New Orleans Hornets were on a roll and put together a nine game wining streak, before losing to the Golden State Warriors last Wednesday 103-116. Nevertheless the Hornets, who started out a solid 20-11, were an amazing 12-2 in the month of January and are 32-15 overall, tied for second in the Western Conference. This season the Hornets are 4-2 against Western Conference powers (San Antonio, Phoenix, and Dallas) and starting to prove to everyone that they too want to be in this elite category of teams.

Their starting point guard, Chris Paul, has been outstanding this season averaging 20.3 points per game and 10.8 assists per game while shooting 48% from the field. David West is also dominating at the power forward position averaging about 19 points and 9 rebounds per game; add a rejuvenated three-point shooting Peja Stojakovic and newly assertive big man play from center Tyson Chandler and you have a quality starting lineup. Chandler has been a long time disappointment because of the trade that he was involved in for Elton Brand, one of the best power forwards in the NBA since 1999.

Outlook & Predictions: I look for the New Orleans Hornets to cool down some the next few months, but come playoff time I think the veteran teams of the Western Conference will prevail, at least this year. With that said, if their core stays the same over the offseason, these Hornets could be good for the next few years. I think the Hornets end the season 55-27 as the Western Conference #4 Seed and take an early second round playoff exit.

  • Hornet Henry's Top 10 FANtasti Hornet Henry's Top 10 FANtastic Moments of 2008-09

    • From: HornetHenry
    • Description:

Good day, playoff-bound Hornets fans. It’s your buddy Hornet Henry checking in again. With the regular season winding down and the postseason rapidly approaching, I couldn’t be any more excited, because it’s time for my second annual Top 10 FANtastic moments article!

Our favorite NBA ballclub wraps up its 2008-09 home slate with a noon game on Easter against the Southwest Division rival Dallas Mavericks. If you haven’t already gotten your tickets, you may be out of luck, but if you can’t join me at the Hive, make sure you tune in to ABC for the national TV broadcast. If you’re scoring at home, Hornets-Mavs is New Orleans’ 12th game to reach the national airwaves this season, a new franchise record.

Speaking of records, Sunday’s game promises to be a memorable and spectacular FANtastic FANale for all involved. Through the April 8 sellout vs. Phoenix, the unyielding support of enthusiastic supporters like you has resulted in the New Orleans Arena being jam-packed with 22 capacity crowds this season. That easily surpassed the regular season total of 2007-08 of 13 sellouts, as well as last season’s COMBINED (regular season plus playoffs) total of 20 sold-out crowds. That’s what I call FANtastic achievement in attendance!

Anyway, while taking a well-deserved breather from trying to tally up all of the Hornets’ attendance records set this season, I managed to find time to pen this article, which is becoming one of my favorite traditions. I hope you like it:

      10) DWest drains game-winning J at Indy.

Hey, they don’t call him the “17-foot Assassin” for nada. With time ticking down, it was a tie ballgame on Dec. 28 at Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse. The Pacers had CP3 trapped in the corner, seemingly with nowhere to go. That’s when the NBA’s leading assist man spotted his fellow All-Star, who calmly netted yet another game-winning shot. It should be noted that this wouldn’t be the last time the Pacers were victimized in the clutch by your Hornets…

      9) CP3’s the hero again in OKC.

For the first two seasons of his pro career, CP3MVP dazzled citizens of the Sooner State, but by Feb. 17, it’d been nearly two years since he had played his home games there. So just in case some folks had forgotten how brilliant the 6-footer can be, he figured he’d provide a friendly reminder, dropping in a game-winning floater over the Thunder with 2 ticks left.

      8) Opening Night victory over LeBron’s Cavs.

We didn’t realize it at the time, but when New Orleans pulled away from Cleveland in crunch time – highlighted by James Posey picking LeBron clean for a breakaway slam – the Hornets had knocked off the NBA’s best team (record-wise). This Nov. 1 game was also the first of what would be many sellouts in the Hive, with the place jam-packed with 18,150 screaming Hornets aficionados.

      7) Eye-opening win on Lakers’ home floor.

Speaking of impressive Hornets victories against top-notch foes, Jan. 6 has to rank near the top. The scene was the Staples Center, where few visitors have enjoyed much success against Hornet Henry’s least-favorite of the two NBA franchises based in Los Angeles. For the Hollywood celebs who still may not be familiar with his game, DWest showed why he’s an All-Star by depositing 40 points.

      6) Shorthanded vs. the Spurs.

Talk about a daunting challenge: on March 29 the Hornets were coming off back-to-back discouraging losses to the Nuggets and Knicks. They were again playing without Tyson, Pose Knows and Peja. And the first-place Spurs were in town, with San Antonio’s roster now back to full strength. Just when you thought the Hornets had no chance, next thing you know they hold San Antonio to 86 points and register what Coach of the Year called “the most important win of the season.”

      5) Tyson’s tip beats Bucks.

Things definitely haven’t gone his way in 2008-09 for my man Ty Lob, whose ankle injury resulted in him playing his fewest games in a single season since ’03-04. Did you know that (through April 6) the Hornets were 30-14 when TC suits up, but 17-15 when he sits out? On Feb. 27 against Milwaukee, Chandler came through with yet another winning play, tipping in a missed shot by DWest with only 3 seconds left. The nerve-wracking W was the third triumph of what would become a season-best, seven-game winning streak for the good guys.

      4) CP3 for 3 beats the buzzer and the Pacers!

Roughly 72 hours before Chris Paul officially became the third Hornet in team history to be voted to start in the All-Star Game, he figured he’d provide an early thank-you gift for fans who stuffed the ballot box. With the ballgame knotted up and time expiring on MLK Day, CP3 sent all of us home happy by draining a high-arching 25-footer over Indy’s Troy Murphy for a 103-100 win. I think it’s safe to say that at this point, the Pacers have had it up to here with Hornets All-Stars and their game-winning shots!

      3) Rasual’s trey crowns Kings/DWest gets 40 on one good ankle.

Down by two points with 1.7 seconds remaining in Sacramento on March 31, my man Devin Brown spotted Rasual Butler for a ultra-clutch, game-winning three-pointer, after David West set a manly pick that took two Kings defenders completely out of the play. Oh by the way, did I mention that in this same game, DWest went into full-on beast mode, torching the nets for 40 points, despite limping up and down the floor with an ankle injury?

      2) Rasual again… this time from 30 feet!

Just seven days after his buzzer-beater at Arco Arena, Sual Bop struck for another ginormous three-pointer at the horn. This time, we were trailing Miami on April 7 by three points as time was about to expire in regulation. That’s when the team’s most improved player somehow managed to track down a pass just before it went into the first row, then fired up a long-distance heave over the Heat from the next county that was all net.

And the No. 1 FANtastic moment of the 2008-09 regular season for your Hornets is…

The King of Steal reigns in NOLA/comeback vs. San Antonio.

As you can see by the multitude of amazing events that took place in 2008-09, choosing a favorite was an extremely difficult decision. There were so many FANtastic moments to choose from, but after extensive contemplation at my Ryan Bowen shrine, I realized the No. 1 FANtastic spot must go to the night of Dec. 17, 2008. It was a game that had everything a true Creole blue enthusiast like me could ever want: an individual NBA record, a huge fourth-quarter comeback by the home team and – most satisfying of all to Hornet Henry – a victory over those dreaded Spurs.

On the same evening that Chris Paul broke the all-time record for most consecutive games with at least one steal, the Hornets outscored the Spurs by 14 points in the fourth quarter to post a 90-83 victory. I absolutely loved it!

Well, that should just about do it for this year’s FANtastic FANale article. Let me know if there’s anything I left out by commenting right here in Swarm City.

See you in the playoffs! Fan Up NOLA!

Well, well, well, Rasual Butler strikes again to give us another win over Miami. In adittion to that Sual also gave us a last-minute win against Sacramento.  He may not be CP3 or David West but when it comes to getting the job done he's the man.   I think he deserves a lot of credit and he's going to be a big factor in the playoffs.  I hope the Hornets don't get rid of him because they're going to regret it in the long-run.

I think CP will make it for sure (did everyone read that his jersey was one of the top sellers on NBA.com on Cyber Monday?). I don't know about the rest of the squad but here's hoping we have full representation of the Hornets in Phoenix come February!

Tonight is VOTE PEJA night at the Hive - so hopefully everyone at home votes this way as well!
